In the upcoming series of articles “How to become self-employed”, I would like to take you on an adventurous journey to the land of uncertainty, hope and personal fulfilment.
We will have to face various tools and applications, make important decisions and be entrepreneurial ourselves in order to successfully complete the mission.
This, or something similar, could be the blurb of a book – but for us, it’s primarily about choosing the right programs or what routines and habits it takes to be self-sufficient.
Many people imagine the term “self-employment” to mean a state of freedom, autonomy and self-determination. Working when you want, for whom you want, from where you want sounds like a dream for many of us trying to achieve.
If the Corona pandemic has taught us anything, it is to be self-reflective on our lives. Meeting family and friends, taking care of one’s health, and enjoying life are just a few buzzwords that appear in many statistical surveys. On the downside of COVID-19, not uncommon historically, women in particular are the social losers. Whether it is to provide for the family and/or children, or to be disadvantaged in working life, the unfair treatment, can lead to a mobilisation to become independent.
According to statistics from the IFB (Institute for Freelance Professions at the University of Erlangen, Germany), the number of freelancers will rise to 1.45 million in 2020. The trend is upward. And at the same time, statistics indicate that there is mainly a regrouping. While especially the number of new online stores increased strongly, on the other hand, self-employed people who build their business mainly on the basis of interpersonal activities (hairdressers, fitness coaches, etc.) were hit very hard.
My wife, who started her own business in February 2021, has realized her dream of independence and now works as an integration coach. In doing so, she works exclusively online with her clients. The online model also gives her the maximum flexibility to adapt to the needs of her clients. As an integration coach, it is also her job to prepare workers coming from abroad for life here in Switzerland, so that they can fully concentrate on their new job.

Building sites all over the place
From the decision to become self-employed to the first paying client, many hours of work are required. Besides the acquisition of new customers and clients, the technical implementation was of course on my agenda.
Online booking system, CRM (Customer Management System), the choice of hosting partner – all this had to be assessed and implemented.
But the process was fun and showed that it doesn’t take a lot of financial resources to escape being an employee. Rather, it takes perseverance, patience and a clear vision of the “desired customer” and one’s own values.
Let’s begin our journey.
I think we all agree that in these stressful times, we are looking for solutions that fill us with joy and we get things done when we want to. And everything is within the framework of a healthy work-life balance.
As I was involved in the various issues around website, tools and processes with my wife, the desire in me also grew to build something together with my wife. Now we each have our own individual strengths and preferences, but what was exciting was that we felt we could start a small family business, for example, to allow our daughter to be more involved in our lives. As employees, we ran to the office day after day, hardly saw each other, and if one of us had a bad day, it would unload at the dinner table and spoil what little time we had left. No thanks!
In the next couple of weeks, I’d like to tell you all about what programs and tools we currently use and why we chose them.
From the hosting partner, to the options with WordPress, to the online booking system Calendly.
Perhaps you too are on the cusp of realizing your dream and you want to start your own business to live a more fulfilling life or realize your dream of doing what you’ve always wanted to do.
In the next article, I cover what you need to consider when choosing hosting. Where we put our focus and what criteria were important for us.
The solutions on the market are diverse – you can build your environment yourself and decide on your own which tools you want to use, or you can use one of the many all-in-one solutions, which have the advantage that you can get started quickly (and without much prior technical knowledge).
